Can I Still Order a Rum and Coke?

How about a Red Bull and vodka?  An Irish Coffee?

Schumer: Four Loko, similar drinks will be banned – Washington Times

New York’s senior senator said Tuesday that high-alcohol, caffeinated beverages such as Four Loko and Joose will soon be banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Let these rulings serve as a warning to anyone who tried to peddle dangerous and toxic brews to our children. Do it and we will shut you down,” said Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat.

This is the kind of thing that almost makes me want to join the Tea Party.

This is just the drug warriors working their rice bowls. The DHS is getting steroidally bulked up with more funding and more weapons and more manpower and now the biggest HQ in Washington (even bigger than the Pentagon, if you can imagine), so all the other agencies want more, bigger, louder, faster, more expensive. So the FDA gets pushed to make drinks with too much caffeine illegal, and who do we think will enforce that? Gee, three guesses. DEA, probably.

For what it’s worth, I predicted this. People ridiculed me. Watch the progression over the next few years. First, caffeine + alcohol drinks get banned; next “legal ecstasy” AKA herbs get banned (salvia divinorum, jimson weed, etc.), and finally the DEA will be smashing in windows and doors and arresting junior high school kids because they’re sneaking green tea and sodas with too much caffeine.

Bureaucratic empires like the DEA and the DHS must either grow or die — so they tend to grow without limit. That’s why the FBI is using SWAT teams to arrest harmless guys who mod game consoles in their garages. It’s why the DHS is now enforcing movie copyrights for Disney, and will soon be smashing in high school kids’ faces with rifle butts and dragging ‘em out of classrooms in handcuffs and leg irons for jailbreaking their iPhones.

The absurdity of banning Four Loko becomes instantly apparent when you realize how easily any high school or college kid can mix Red Bull and vodka. It takes, what? Ten seconds? A ban on caffeinated alcoholic drinks is ridiculous, pointless, useless, and demented…unless you’re a law enforcement bureaucrat who wants more money for your little federal fiefdom.
